Malibu Democratic Club Members and Friends —
How has your summer been so far? Things are starting to get a little exciting here in the ole Dem Club!
A special thanks to Candace Bowes and David Kurtz for hosting a delightful coffee to meet 33rd Congressional District Candidate Ted Lieu at their lovely Point Dume home last Sunday (snapshot is above – Ted is at left). Among those attending were Councilmembers Joan House, Laura Rosenthal and Lou La Monte! If you couldn’t make it this time, there will be several more informal opportunities to meet November ballot candidates. We’ll keep you posted here and online at MalibuDemocraticClub.org.
Coffees, parties, and meetings like this are grass roots Democracy in action! They’re how the system works! Before this campaign season ends, I hope all of you, your friends, and your friends’ friends are able to participate and experience it!
Here’s something you might not know: Our new Membership Committee reports that about 3,100 Democrats are registered in Malibu. Are you surprised? The number is not as many as outsiders might expect, but according to Past President Ralph Erickson the numbers actually are up slightly over the past five years. Despite this, our club’s membership fell to less than 100 members during the last few years. So we have lots of growing room and we’ll be setting new membership goals. You can provide a leg up by inviting your friends and neighbors to this fall’s ranch-style barbecue on Sept. 23 at Doug Rosen’s amazing ranch in the Monte Nido area. Ted Lieu and Florida’s star legislator, Rep. Alan Grayson, will be there. We also will have other special surprises ahead, so stay tuned!
Meanwhile the MDC is off to a good start on bylaws revisions. At the July board meeting our Bylaws Committee and the board reviewed language clarifying some of our procedures. We also decided it would be helpful to add some new practices enabled by technological advances that were not commonplace the last time the bylaws were updated. Under the guidance of Dem Club Vice President Ted Vaill, a lawyer and three-term delegate to the California Central Committee Convention, we will continue working on bylaws revisions at our next board meeting on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014. To attend, send an email to Malibudemocraticclub@gmail.com and include your phone number. We’ll respond with the agenda and location.
Do you like to plan fun parties? Are you good with art, design, and decorations? Do you like to greet people at the door? Do you have great computer skills? If these things sound fun, please email us. We can use your help.
Our club has incredible potential. Our voice can be powerful and influential. You can help make that happen. To join the membership committee please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and we hope to see you at our upcoming events.
